Violet M. Pierce, 96, of Steubenville, OH, formerly of Mingo Junction, Ohio passed away Saturday May 8, 2021 at the Valley Hospice Care Center North in Steubenville, OH.
She was born January 30, 1925 in Harriettsville, Ohio, a daughter of the late Bernice (Mallett) Nichols and Orval Nichols; and the late H. Victor Gilreath of Sturgis, Michigan. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, C. Ralph “Bud” Pierce; and a son-in-law, Patrick Burchfield.
Violet has been a resident of the Steubenville-Mingo Junction area since 1934. She graduated from Steubenville High School in 1942 and became an Executive/Legal Secretary. She worked a number of years in the Administrative Office of the Steubenville Board of Education; The First National Bank & Trust Co. (now Chase Bank); The Regional Planning Commission of Jefferson County; the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office; and most recently for Attorney Jerry L. Boswell of Steubenville, Ohio. She retired in 2007.
She was a devoted member of the Finley United Methodist Church in Steubenville, where she had taught in the Junior Department of the Sunday School; worked as church secretary for six years; served on the Finance Committee of the Church for over 50 years, holding positions such as Financial Secretary; Chairperson of the Finance Committee and Local Church Treasurer.
Survivors include; a son, D. Keith (Clara) Pierce of Follansbee, WV; a daughter Carol L. Burchfield of Steubenville, Ohio; four grandchildren, Timothy (Jennifer) Pierce of Steubenville, OH, W. Tod Burchfield of Steubenville, Ohio, Heidi (Stewart) Moore of Toronto, OH and Heather (David) Hughes of Steubenville, Ohio; nine great-grandchildren, Patrick and Brandon Keiski, Dustin and Sage Trumbull, Rylee, Ty, Emme and Ali Pierce, and Cierra Barnhart; two sisters, Marlene (Dennis) Stephens, of Belpre, Ohio and Thelma Mallett of Longwood, FL; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Wheeler Funeral Home, 101 Longview Ave., Mingo Junction, on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of her funeral services at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Rick Dawson, officiating. Private interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Mingo. Masks are required at the funeral home.
