Sophie Schoolcraft, 92, of Mingo Junction, OH passed away peacefully Sunday, February 6, 2022 in her home.
She was born December 16, 1929 in Mingo Junction, OH, a daughter of the late John and Martha (Munas) Dojonovic. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sherrill S. Schoolcraft on January 15, 1977; three brothers, Daniel, Steven and Robert Dojonovic; and four sisters, Selma Auvil, Mildred Sherensky, Mary Galownia and Anna Roberts.
Early in life, Sophie held many roles and accomplished many goals, all for the well being of others. She has been part of many aspects of our community such as vice president and treasurer of Harmony School's PTA; she organized the Indian Creek Central Junior High PTA; treasurer of the Mingo Band Boosters; Indian Creek High School pep rally adviser and cheerleading adviser; chairman and organizer of Mingo Community Days; Mingo Christmas tree light-up night; and Mingo Memorial Day Services.
Sophie served as treasurer of Mingo Junction, for over 35 years, has served on the Indian Creek Foundation Board, has held a seat on the Jefferson County Democratic Executive Committee, has been the president of the Mingo Democratic Woman's Club and director of Mingo Social Services, where she has provided much-needed food and supplies to citizens of this valley who are less fortunate than herself. She was also a volunteer and fundraiser for the United Way of Jefferson County. Sophie was a member of the Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Church in Steubenville.
In her lifetime Sophie has received many awards, some of which include, the Horizon Award, Herald Star Community Stars Award, Indian Creek Community Character Award, 110th Congress, Congressional letter of Commendation, and Volunteer of the Year for the Knights of Columbus.
She is survived by her three children, John (Janice) Schoolcraft of Mingo Junction, OH, Brian Schoolcraft of Macedonia, OH and Lynda (Robert) Riesbeck of Memphis, TN; four grandchildren, Mike (Pam) Anderson, Ashley Murray, Jessica Lopez, and Brianne Schoolcraft; and nine great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Wheeler Funeral Home, 101 Longview Ave., Mingo Jct. on Thursday from 1-4 and 6-8 p.m. There will also be viewing Friday at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of her funeral service at Noon with Very Rev. Stavrophor Rajok Kosic, officiating. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Mingo Junction. Masks are recommended at the funeral home.
