Shirley R. Coen

Shirley R. Coen, 86, of Brilliant, OH, passed away Saturday January 21, 2023, at the Valley Hospice Care Center North in Steubenville, OH.

She was born September 9, 1936 in Belmont, OH, a daughter of the late Delbert and Marjorie “Gertrude” (Gatten) Owens. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph E. Coen on June 20, 2016; a son, Charles R. Coen; two brothers, James “Cecil” Owens and Charles “Dean” Owens; and a sister, Maxine Carpenter.

Shirley was a homemaker. She was a member of the Brilliant American Legion Auxiliary and the Democratic Women. She also helped to start up the girls softball program in Brilliant and she coached the Tigers.

Surviving are a son, Jamie (Pam) Coen of Brilliant, OH; a sister, Betty Catron of Eustis, FL; two special nieces, Tammy (Harry) Meeker of Dillonvale, OH and Sharon Catron of Florida; six adopted grandchildren, Seth, Hannah and Sarah Otto and Josh, Jacob and Jordan Hilliard; and one adopted great-grandchild, Charlie Hilliard.

Friends will be received at the Wheeler Funeral Home, 712 Third St., Brilliant, OH, on Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of her funeral services at 5:00 p.m. with Rev. John Ater, officiating. Private burial at New Alexandria Cemetery. There will be a legion auxiliary service at 4:45 p.m.
