Kathryn A. "Katie" Grantonic

Kathryn A. “Katie” Grantonic, 95, of Mingo Junction, Ohio, passed away Wednesday November 21, 2018 at the Valley Hospice Care Center North in Steubenville, Ohio.

She was born November 11, 1923 in Mingo Junction, Ohio a daughter of the late Joseph and Anna (Pacina) Rufus. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William M. Grantonic on June 1, 1998; two brothers, Joseph and John Rufus; and five sisters, Pauline Thom, Anna Bucko, Mary Rufus, Margaret Urdzik and Agnes Rufus.

Katie graduated from Mingo High School in 1941 and was a homemaker. In 1973 Katie earned the distinction of being the first lady discount store assistant manager in the United States while managing the Treasure Island Department Store in Steubenville, she retired in 1982. She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and the Catholic Womens Club at the Church; the Democratic Club; Mingo Womens Club; Shanagu Club; Mingo Senior Citizens Club; and the former Steubenville Business and Professional Womens Club.

Katie enjoyed playing cards, was an avid reader, she liked visiting and having coffee with friends at the Mingo Senior Center and watching Cleveland Benedictine, Norte Dame University and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Surviving are a daughter, Judy (James) Brooks of Sarasota, FL; two grandchildren, Christopher (Kristen) Brooks of Pittsburgh, PA and Karen (Liam) Campion of Philadelphia, PA; four great-grandchildren, Jack, Ben, and Emma Brooks; and Taran Brooks Campion.

The family would like to thank Katie’s special niece Joanne and Evo Levi; good neighbors and friends, Tina and Roger Paulman; and Dr. John Figel.

Friends will be received on Sunday from 1-5 p.m. at the Wheeler Funeral Home, 101 Longview Ave., Mingo Junction. On Monday there will be viewing at St. Agnes Catholic Church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of her Funeral Liturgy with Mass at 10:00 a.m., with Rev. Fr. James M. Dunfee, as celebrant. Entombment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Steubenville, OH

There will be a Vigil service on Sunday at 4:45 p.m.
