J. Doug Thorne

J. Doug Thorne, 71, of Steubenville, OH, passed away Saturday May 21, 2022 at the Valley Hospice Care Center North in Steubenville, OH. 

He was born September 28, 1950 in Parkersburg, WV. He was preceded in death by his father, Jennings Z. Thorne; his mother, Geneva M. (Westfall) Hague; and his step-father, Robert “Bob” Hague. 

Doug worked for the United States Postal Service for 36 years before his retirement. He worked in both the Steubenville and Wintersville offices as a window clerk and dock worker. He was also the former treasurer for many years for the post office union APWU. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Wintersville. He was a member of the Weirton Moose Lodge and a Catholic Central Band Booster for 10 years. He enjoyed bowling and golfing. He also was an avid sports fan, especially when it came to watching his grandchildren play.  

Surviving are his wife, Joanne (Knox) Thorne, whom he married on July 5, 1975; a daughter, Megan (Tim) Roberts of Mingo Junction, OH; a son, Richard (Erin) Thorne of Debary, FL; a sister, Sarah Reynard of New Alexandria, OH; five grandchildren, Jarred, Austyn and Gavynn Roberts, Skylarh and Caleb Thorne; and two great-grandchildren, Ava and Adaline Thorne. 

Friends will be received on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Wheeler Funeral Home, 101 Longview Ave., Mingo Junction where his funeral service will be held on Wednesday at  11:00 a.m. with Fr. Michael Gossett, officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Steubenville, OH.
