Dr. Howard Mallett Obituary

Dr. Howard Eugene Mallett, 79, of Scottsdale, Arizona, formerly of Mingo Junction, Ohio, went into his Eternal Rest with his Savior and family on August 14, 2021, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born in Steubenville, Ohio, January 13, 1942, to Cecil Clayton and Beatrice (Ullman) Mallett.  As a young man growing up in the Ohio Valley, he attended Finley Methodist Church with his family, he enjoyed Little League, Pony League, and Prep League baseball and he was quarterback on the Mingo High School football squad.  On his parents’ little farm, he loved the outdoors, riding the tractor in the hay field, and tending the gardens.

He entered college on a baseball scholarship at the University of Pittsburgh, having had the choice of either baseball or football.  At West Virginia University he received his degree to practice dentistry and furthered this D. D. S. at Duke University’s Medical School for a degree in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Dr. Mallett entered the military as a Captain in the Army’s Dental Corps and received an honorable discharge after serving three years in Ansbach and Nuremberg, Germany.

Pursuing the purpose of his education, Dr. Mallett, went west.  His private practice in Lewiston, Idaho served northern Idaho, northeastern Oregon, and southeastern Washington, an area greatly in need of his service at that time.  In cooperation with a university in California, Dr. Mallett shared a technique he developed as he perfected his TMJ procedure and was instrumental in promoting and speaking at seminars in the region to provide instruction.

Dr. Mallett retired to Scottsdale, Arizona, where he was an avid golfer at the Tatum Ranch Country Club.  One of his sons recalls that he shot his age and had a single digit handicap.  He greatly enjoyed his Arizona Cardinals and the Diamondbacks.  His other interests included traveling, gardening, boating, and the whole family were expert skiers, having practiced on some of the world’s finest slopes in Europe.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Susan (Rognstad) Mallett of Scottsdale; the mother of his children, Linda (Prager) Miltenberger, of Lewiston, ID; sons Howard E. “Gene” (Catherine) Mallett, Jr. of Flanders, NJ; Eric S. (Laura) Mallett of Rio Rancho, NM; Scott C. Mallett of Portland, OR;  grandchildren Nicole Mallett of VT, Caitlin and Ryan Mallett of NJ; Mallory (Chris) Herrera of WI and Josh Mallett of NM; Aubriana Mallett of OR, Adam Mallett of AZ and Isabella (Samuel) Intidam of GA; great grandchildren Drizzt and Bruce Herrera of WI; and Robynne Intidam of GA; sisters Martha (Charles, Jr. dec.)
