Ralph "Eugene" Humes, 86, of New Alexandria, OH, passed away Wednesday February 21, 2024 at the Valley Hospice Care Center North in Steubenville, OH.
He was born August 26, 1937, in Steubenville, OH, son of the late Ralph V. and Ruth E. (Smith) Humes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Lillian Humes; an infant son, Joseph E. Humes, and a brother, David C. Humes.
Eugene started out working in the shop at Humes Trucking, he then went to work as a heavy equipment operator at Straus Mining and Starvogi Mining until his retirement. He was a member of the Plum Run Church of Christ in Christian Union and he enjoyed singing at church. Eugene was good at everything that he set out to accomplish, he was exceptionally good with math. The things that he did in his lifetime were more than most get to even think about. He built his own home; built custom Hot Rod cars; built model airplanes; racing and built dirt bikes. He also would show horses in his earlier years. After his retirement he and his wife Nancy would ride their Goldwing for months at a time, they traveled to all 50 states.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy C. (Lockhart) Humes, whom he married November 7, 1959; three sons, Ralph Humes and his partner Patrick of Syracuse, NY, Richard (Belinda) Humes of Boliver, OH and Randy Humes and his girlfriend Kara Busefink of Bloomingdale, OH; a daughter, Jodie Lynne Rouse and her fiancé Mark Spindler of Wintersville, OH; a brother, Pastor Harry (Eleanor) Humes of Harrodsburg, KY; a sister, Dana Cangley of Wheeling, WV; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Wheeler Funeral Home 712 Third St., Brilliant, OH, on Friday from 4-8 p.m. and on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of his funeral service at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor Harry Humes, officiating. Private interment at New Alexandria Cemetery.
