IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Martin E.
'Marty" "Coach" Connor
November 12, 1942 – November 19, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Martin "Marty" "Coach" Connor, of Mingo Junction, Ohio, a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather, and cherished member of our community, who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at the age of 82.
Born on November 12, 1942, in Steubenville, Ohio. Marty was the beloved son of the late Martin and Mary (Getsey) Connor. A man of Catholic faith, he was a graduate of Steubenville Catholic Central High School, Class of 1960. Marty is survived by his wife of over 57 years, Dolores (Abbate) Connor, who was his steadfast partner in life. Together, they raised three sons: Andrew (Tiffany) Connor, Jamie (Lori) Connor, and David (Carrie) Connor. He was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren, Zachary, AJ, Chelsea, Luca, and Maisie, who were the light of his life.
Marty dedicated over 37 years to his career at International Mill Service in Mingo. Beyond work, his impact on the community was immeasurable. He served as a city councilman and was an active member of St. Agnes Church, where he was a lector and a member of the Knights of Columbus. His passion for sports and commitment to youth development were evident in his many roles, including St. Agnes baseball coach, football coach, and athletic director. He also coached for the Mingo American Legion team and contributed to Mingo High School football as a coach and statistician.
For decades, Marty played a central role in organizing the St. Agnes Junior High Basketball Tournament and was a key figure in the St. Agnes Athletic Festival. Even in retirement, his dedication to sports and community continued as he volunteered on his sons' staff at Indian Creek High School, serving as equipment coordinator for over 14 years.
Above all, Marty cherished his family and found his greatest joy in supporting his grandchildren. Whether attending their sporting events, school activities, or simply spending time together, he was their biggest fan and greatest source of pride. He also had a deep love for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers, delighting in attending Pirates games in person.
Marty's love for storytelling, his kind and humorous nature, and his dedication to family and friends made him a pillar of the community. From sharing laughs and a cold beer at the "Coach's Corner" at his favorite downtown establishment to celebrating birthdays, holidays, and cookouts, Marty's presence enriched the lives of everyone who knew him.
Friends and family are invited to honor Marty's life at Wheeler Funeral Home, 101 Longview Ave., Mingo Junction on Sunday, November 24th, from 2:00 to 6:00 PM. On Monday there will be viewing at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Mingo from 9:00 a.m. until the time of his Funeral Liturgy with Mass at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Fr. James M. Dunfee, celebrant. Marty's final resting place will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Steubenville, OH.
On Sunday there will be Vigil Service at 5:45 p.m.
Marty's legacy of kindness, dedication, and love will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
