Joseph P. "Joe" Makara, 86, of Mingo Junction, Ohio, peacefully found rest at home from a lengthy struggle with health issues on Tuesday January 12, 2016 at home. He was comforted by family during his passing.

He was born April 24, 1929 in Martins Ferry, Ohio, a son of the late Joseph P. and Elizabeth C. (Kernya) Makara, Sr. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joan Gwynn.

While he retired from Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Corp. as a crane operator his lifelong passion was spent as owner of Superior Auto Body in Mingo Junction for 58 years. He was known through out the Ohio Valley as one of the best mechanics and body men. His wealth of knowledge and experience was evident in the confidence of those who traveled near and far for his workmanship and he was always willing to sharing his knowledge with any one of the many young men who frequented the garage. He was always available and helped many in an unselfish and humble manor.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 65 years, Dorothy (Marcinko) Makara, whom he married on December 29, 1950; two daughters, Bonita Farinelli of Carnegie, PA and Tammy (Steve) Kozora of Colliers, WV; a son, Joseph R. "Ricky" Makara of Mingo Junction; his beloved grandson, Brandon Rouse of Weirton, WV; a brother-in-law, James Marcinko of Mingo Junction; numerous nieces and nephews and his faithful companion, Zippy the Cat who he loved dearly.

Friends will be received on Thursday from 3:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Wheeler Funeral Home, 101 Longview Ave., Mingo Junction where his funeral services will be held on Friday at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Michael E. Bongart, officiating. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Mingo.
