Mr. John Richard Rogers, 80, left his earthly home on September 24, 2018 after a courageous 18 year battle with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
He will be missed by all who knew him. He never met a stranger. He was born on November 17, 1937, to the late Frank and Helen Fabian Rogers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his former wife, Patricia Ross Rogers; and sister, Grace Fristick.
John spent most of his adult life in Mingo Junction, Ohio, and moved to Winston-Salem in 1996. He was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Sowers Rogers of the home; one son, Jeff Rogers (Connie) of Winston-Salem; Daughter, Vicki Bauer (Jack) of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren, Matt Bauer (Ashley), Brett Bauer, Jenna Poole (Justin), Aaron Rogers (Shone) and Justin Rogers; two step grandchildren, Jesse Carr (Kathryn) and Jason Carr (Shannon); four great-grandchildren, Bella, Michael, Taylor, and Sammy; and two step- great grandchildren, Aiden and Jared; and one sister, Donna Balzano (John) of Mingo Junction, Ohio. Also surviving are his second family, Jeff Long (Wendy) of Winston-Salem and Amy Hinson (Tommy) of Albemarle. He was fondly known as Papaw to Dustin Long (aka Fred) and Luke Hinson (Train Brain); brother-in-law, Tommy Sowers of Lexington; and his four legged children, Zeke and Star.
Friends will be received at the Wheeler Funeral Home, 101 Longview Ave., Mingo Junction on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Military burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Mingo Junction, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lymphoma Research Foundation, 88 Pine Street, Suite 2400, New York, NY, or Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Ln, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
