David "Pap" Buchanan, 91, of Brilliant, Ohio, passed away Sunday December 31, 2017 in the emergency room at Trinity Medical Center West, Steubenville, OH.

He was born July 14, 1926 in Brilliant, OH, the son of the late William E. and Mary E. (Pemberton) Buchanan. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, David H. Buchanan in 1956; a grandson, Larry "Bub" Roush; two brothers, Albert and William Buchanan; three sisters, Evelyn Yost, Helen Flordeliz, and Virginia Hemsley and four half-brothers, John and Ross Buchanan, Tim Dolan and an infant.

Dave retired from Zimnox Coal Co. after working for 42 years as a truck driver then mechanic. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII in the Philippines. Dave was a charter member and past commander of the Brilliant American Legion Post 573 of which he was a member for 51 years.  Pap was a member of the Brilliant Presbyterian Church where he was an elder and was in the breakfast club at the church for 10 years; he was the founder of the Steel Valley Horseshoe Club; a former little league coach; former member of the Ohio State Patrol Auxiliary; former member of the Brilliant Fire Department; member of the Wells Twp. Food Bank; and retired member of Mingo Sportsman Club.

Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Margaret (Smith) Buchanan, whom he married on May 29, 1948; two sons, Norman (Lynn) Buchanan of Mingo Junction, OH and Tim (Debbie) Buchanan of Brilliant, OH; two daughters, Barbara Roush and Davina (Gene) Evans both of Brilliant, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Wheeler Funeral Home, 712 Third St., Brilliant on Wednesday from 3-8 p.m. and also on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of his funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Kenn Sickle, officiating. Military honors by the Brilliant American Legion will follow his funeral service.  Private interment will follow at New Alexandria Cemetery.

There will be a Legion Service on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
