Obituary

Clyde R. "Rick" Wine, Sr., 77, of Brilliant, OH, passed away Monday December 22, 2025 at Weirton Medical Center in Weirton, WV.

He was born April 24, 1948 in Steubenville, OH a son of the late Clyde C. and Wilda (Mossor) Wine. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Ricky Wine on April 27, 2013; and a brother-in-law, Steve Boyd on September 5, 2021.

Rick graduated from Brilliant High School in 1967 and went on to earn a degree from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh before joining the military. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, where his artistic abilities were used as an 81E20 Art Illustrator—a role that helped keep him safe during the Vietnam War. Rick was also a dedicated member of the Brilliant American Legion Post 573.

After returning home, Rick began working for Creegan Company in Steubenville where his artistic abilities were put to good use. Soon after, he embarked on a 38-year career at Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Corp., serving in the Mingo, Steubenville, and Follansbee complexes. His work ethic was unmatched. Rick was deeply involved with the U.S.W.A. Local #1190 Union, serving as Assistant Editor of the newsletter for multiple administrations, Safety Committee Representative, Shop Steward, and Picket Captain. He generously volunteered his artistic talents for several union election campaigns and traveled with his Local's International Union Representative to lobby bankers and investors during a successful 10½-month labor struggle to restore industry-standard pension benefits.

When Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Corp. closed, Rick remained active, taking on a variety of part-time jobs in the area until his cancer diagnosis in November 2024. He continued to give back to his community, volunteering countless hours to create signs and artwork for local events, including all the artwork for the Brilliant Blue Devils Reunion and painting the coffee pot wall in front of the post office.

Rick was known for his generosity, especially towards children and families in need. Whether it was providing school supplies, helping with Christmas celebrations, or assisting with bills, his kindness was always top notch.

He also had a deep love for birds, possessing a vast knowledge of species and their calls. Rick built countless bird boxes throughout the area—sometimes even where it wasn't allowed. He raised doves and pigeons, with sparrows being his favorite.

Above all, Rick cherished his family. He especially adored his grandsons, nieces, and great-niece and nephews, always finding reasons to spend time with them. For Rick, family was everything.

He is survived by a daughter, Mary Jo Boyd of Grove City, OH and her companion Brian Workman; a sister, Rita Boyd of Brilliant, OH and her companion Bill Nest; two grandsons, Zachary (Bri Hager) Boyd of Colorado Springs, CO and Alec Boyd of Grove City, OH; two nieces, Tonya (Tony) Porreca of Toronto, OH and Stefanie (Geordie) Lindsay of Smithfield, OH; five great-niece and great-nephews. Laney, Anthony and Angelo Porreca and Preston and Colin Lindsay; as well as a host of dear friends who were a huge part of his life.

The family would like to thank the staff at Weirton Medical Center as well as Valley Hospice for the wonderful care they gave Rick in his final days.

Friends will be received on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Wheeler Funeral Home, 712 Third St., Brilliant, OH, where his funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Paul Russell, officiating.  Interment will follow at New Alexandria Cemetery with Military Honors by the Brilliant American Legion Post 573.
