Lloyd Samuel “Pastor Sam” Retzer, 73, of Mingo Junction, Ohio, went to be with the Lord on Thursday October 24, 2019 at the Carriage Inn of Steubenville, OH, with his family by his side.
He was born August 8, 1946 in Steubenville, Ohio, a son of the late Lloyd R. and Audrey (Rine) Retzer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother.
Pastor Sam graduated from Brilliant High School in 1964. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1966-1969 with a tour in Vietnam. He worked at TIDD and Cardinal Plants from 1969-1981, and during that time he also worked part time in Ministry. In 1981 Rev. Sam started working full time in ministry as a former associate Pastor and Youth Director at Wellsburg Church of God; former Pastor of Plum Run House of Prayer for 8 years; and former Pastor of Kolmont Community Church for 32 years retiring in 2017. He was a member of the Brilliant American Legion Post 573; former member of the Buckeye Ruritan Club; former member of the New Alexandria Fire Department; and former Chief of Police of New Alexandria.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Darlene F. (Haught) Retzer, whom he married on December 30, 1967; two daughters, Tanya (Mike) Flesher and Shawna (James) Westfall, both of Mingo Junction, OH; and three grandchildren, Corban Westfall, Samantha “Sammi” Westfall and Cayden Flesher.
Friends will be received at the Wheeler Funeral Home, 712 Third St., Brilliant, on Monday from 2-8 p.m. On Tuesday there will be visitation at the Kolmont Community Church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of his funeral services at 11:00 a.m. with his son-in-law, Jim Westfall and Jack Ernest, officiating. Interment will follow at New Alexandria Cemetery, with Military Honors by the Brilliant American Legion Post 573.
