LOVED Dr. Bezak. Had him 4 times (Calc 1 & 3, Differential eq., and Math Seminar) Helped start his car in the parking lot when if wouldn't start and worked on it a couple of times. Helped me get a couple of scholarships. Sr. year when I was busy with work and track he gave me a lot if leeway with Math Seminar and kept a copy of my paper to show future students. I have a lot of great stories about him - sad to hear of his passing.

Shortly after moving to Clarion in the late summer of 1988 I met Nick at a local restaurant. It was always nice to have conversations with Nick. He had a wide variety of interests beyond his mathematics profession. Over the past 29 years I learned so much from him. He will be missed.

Brother Nickey was eight years ahead of me in school and I followed in his footsteps. At Wintersville high school and the College of Steubenville I had classes with many of his instructors, professors and Franciscan Brothers who asked the first few days in front of the class if Nick was my brother? I said yes and after a sigh or a few grunts they politely informed me that essentially, I had some big shoes to fill. Sometimes in class when I struggled with an answer they would go on about what Nick would have said or done. I did not reach the high peaks that he did but I did get and advanced degree in Math and taught for twenty years at the college level mostly thanks to him. In the 1960’s he showed me Pittsburgh – the universities, museums, parks, Steelers, Pirates and some excellent Chinese restaurants. In the 1970’s he showed me around Clarion. Then I was able to show him Washington D.C., Downeast Maine and Vermont.
We always kept in touch, mostly by telephone. If you called him you needed to let it ring along time. My limit was 14 rings. He called me often on that rotary phone. Don’t those things ever wear out? We shared a love of the family farm, our siblings and especially our mother who had an encyclopedic mind for family friends and events just like Nickey. A darkness has come. I feel a loneliness decending. I miss you brother.

Dr. B was my favourite professor at Clarion. I took pretty well every course he offered. I loved his classes. Now in 1969-71 grad students came in suits, most from work. I was just a kid and showed up in cut offs and a t-shirt. I remember my first grad level class from him. I called him Dr. B and 3 students almost fainted. Dr B always wore a black suit and addressed us formally, myself as Mr. Helms.
Dr B was a great influence on my career in computer R&D. He taught me how to attack a complex problem.
Dr B - you will be missed.

Nick was a frequent and loyal patron of the library. He'd come in to request obscure mathematics texts so that he could keep up with the profession; he always marveled that we could obtain them for him at no charge. He never failed to buy a couple of candy bars on his way out the door "for later". Also enjoyed running into him at the coffee shop and farmer's market; he always had time to chat and was always interested in how others were faring. He was a delightful man and will be missed.

Nick was my classmate at Wintersville High School. I thought a lot of him and considered him to be a good friend. I was very interested in reading how well he did in life with his brilliant math abilities and his outlook on living. My condolences to his family.

To my Father's side of our family, I am saddened to hear about my Cousin Nick's death. Nick was rolling through college not long after I was born. I did not have much contact with him, but remember his dark hair, soft and gentle nature, and sweet shy smile. I am so sorry for your loss. Through your stories and updates, I know how special Nick was to each of you, and to those who met and knew him through his community. The word "grace' comes to mind. How wonderful that he was able to touch so many lives in such a positive and memorable manner.

Dr. Bezak was my math teacher at Clarion. I didn't know it at the time, but I became a math teacher myself. He was kind to us. Gentle and patient. He used to look out the window of our classroom and remark what a nice day it was. He was easy to appreciate and I will not forget him. That was about 29 years ago. Definitely A+ for him as great human being.

"Doc" was a wonderful teacher who I had the honor of meeting at Clarion State College. While in college I also worked at a local restaurant, the Clarion Clipper, and would wait on him quite often. He was just as patient with a rushed waitress as he was with someone who as having a tough time understanding a math concept. So glad to have known him.
