William D. “Bill” Murtland, 86, of Mingo Junction, OH, passed away Wednesday March 20, 2024 at the Laurels of Steubenville, OH.
He was born January 14, 1938 in Mingo Junction, OH, a son of the late Edward and Geraldine R. (Jacobs) Murtland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Charlene Murtland; and a brother-in-law, Kelly Lonetto.
Bill graduated from Mingo High School in 1955. After high school he worked as a lifeguard at Mingo Pool and was the Manager of Aracoma Park. In 1960 we went to work for Arthur Murry Professional Dance Studio out of Steubenville where he sang and danced, during that time he was also part of the Steubenville Players Club. After Arthur Murray he worked in the Social Security office in Steubenville for a short period of time. From 1968-1972 he taught dance to students at Mingo High School. He then moved to Bardstown, KY where he worked for Stephen Foster Outdoor Drama for 30 years. During that time, he traveled to Japan, Hawaii and all over the U.S. He came back to the Ohio Valley and worked for Prime Time delivering meals until his retirement. He was a member of the First Westminster Presbyterian Church in Steubenville where he sang in the choir, and he also sang in the Ohio Valley Chorale.
Surviving are four siblings, Wilma (Robert) Mucha of Oxford, OH, Nancy Lonetto and her fiancé Ed Mascio of Mingo Junction, OH, Cheryl (Jack) Brettell of Mingo Junction, OH and Keith (Karol) Murtland of Toronto, OH; six nieces; four nephews; seventeen great-nieces and nephews and four great-great-nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at Wheeler Funeral Home, 101 Longview Avenue, Mingo Junction, OH on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8. On Tuesday there will be viewing at First Westminster Church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of his funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with Rich Cunningham and Chad Bauman, officiating. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Mingo Junction.
